What’s actually in Thousand Oaks tap water

Thousand Oaks water is not local water. Roughly 99% of it begins in the Feather River watershed in the northern Sierras, travels south through the State Water Project, and is treated at Metropolitan’s Jensen plant before it ever reaches the Conejo Valley. The remaining 1% is local surface water stored in Lake Bard — Calleguas’ reservoir just outside town — and treated here in the county. It meets every state and federal standard. It is also hard:

  • Total hardness: 146 ppm — about 8.5 grains per gallon (water drawn from Lake Bard runs 156 ppm)
  • Total dissolved solids: 362 ppm (Lake Bard: 420 ppm)
  • Sodium: 64 ppm (Lake Bard: 81 ppm)

Hardness and dissolved solids are what people taste in a glass of office water, and what leaves scale in the coffee maker and the ice machine.
